I may have mentioned this once or twice before and — I’m sure I’ll mention it again, I’m a total sucker for a story! This one began with a best friend saying “girl you’ve gotta meet him…”

In like fashion, I’m only able to share these engagement moments because Loraine and Cheyenne enjoyed their Grand Gestures Proposal Experience with me over a year ago. When Shane and Sydney got engaged, Loraine told her close friend, Sydney, “Girl, you have to call LaDonna.”

Every Hawaii beach proposal I plan and photograph is super special, but I have to admit I’m always mighty flattered when my clients are so happy with their experience that they entrust their closest friends to me. By the time Sydney reached out, she wasn’t shopping around for a photographer. She was ready to put a date on the calendar. When a couple trusts a friend’s word that much, the only thing left for me to do is set the alarm and earn it.

A Best Friend Setup

Meet Sydney & Shane

But enough about me — meet Sydney & Shane. I know nowadays Tinder connections are the norm, when’s the last time you heard tell of a setup leading to marriage? … Think on it— I’ll wait… ⌚️ Been a while right?!! Just a few years ago, Sydney’s friend insisted she “meet this guy.” They got each other’s Snapchat and chatted there for a while. Eventually, they had to carry their connection out into the real world and boy did they hit it off!

A Signature Engagement Session

Fast forward to a Signature Engagement Session on a February morning. We met on the sand at Kaʻaʻawa. This stretch of windward coastline is pure drama: the Koʻolau ridges rise almost straight up from Kamehameha Highway, the beach faces east, and the sun climbs right out of the ocean and lands on whoever was brave enough to wake up for it. At that hour, it belonged to the three of us.

Every couple gets one non-negotiable text from me the morning of: hey hey 👋🏾 don’t forget your ring. Most answer with a thumbs-up. Sydney answered with three words and zero worry: “I have it on.”

One of my favorite things about Hawaii is the culture of greeting people with puas (flowers) in the form of leis. Lei is for special occasions, it’s Aloha in action— well, if you hang with me on Instagram then you already know, I’m absolutely here for it!

Sydney wore a sweeping blue hibiscus maxi to the session. Knowing she was new to the island, I helped crown her look with a red lei—island-bold and unapologetically bright against a pastel sky. Shane kept it crisp in a blue polo and khaki shorts, the kind of look that photographs beautifully in every light and commands attention without having to compete for it.

Posing 101

Before the light arrived, I sat down in the sand with the two to hear more about their love story and let them enjoy light refreshments. We did a quick warm up with, what Demetrius lovingly coined— Posing 101. If you’ve ever wondered what to do with your hands in front of a camera, this is where we gently lay that worry to rest… at the bottom of the ocean. For these two, it didn’t take long. The moment the sun broke over the water, Shane swept Sydney off the sand as first light hit the ridge behind them.

When the light softened, we traded open beach for texture: a perch on the rocks framed in greenery, and the shade of a tree at the waterline with sun filtering through its branches. That’s where the laughter took over.

And finally it was time to play in the water. You can’t have engagement portraits on the beach and not get wet. Shane charged through the shallows with both arms thrown up in victory, and before long Sydney was riding piggyback into the surf. This is the moment worth waking up at 4:00 am for: the second a couple stops performing for the camera and starts lovingly, joyfully playing with each other.

We closed with the idea I’d pitched the day before, a champagne pop. Sydney was sold from the start, “That sounds fun!” While that’s what she said in text message, what I read was: ‘say less, LaDonna.’

The champagne cork flew with the windward mountains standing guard behind them.

If you want to know how a morning truly went, watch what happens after. Sydney and Shane checked for their gallery every day until it landed, chose forty favorites, and turned one into their save the dates.

Whenever I book a couple from a referral, there’s always a little added pressure. If I gave the referring couple 100% in their session, then I owe their friends 110%.

Text message from Sydney: Hello! Just wanted to say thank you sooo much for capturing the most special day with my person!!!
