Hawaii Engagement Photos at Barbers Point Lighthouse

Most people picture Hawaii engagement photos as turquoise water and a crowded stretch of sand. Barbers Point is something else entirely.

Out on the island’s southwest tip, a white lighthouse stands over a rugged limestone shoreline, vivid green brush lines the sandy paths, and one of the best sunsets in Oahu drops straight into open ocean with very few people around to watch it— besides you. If you want photographs that are unmistakably Hawaii without looking like everyone else’s Hawaii, this location is one worth knowing.

📍 Where Is the Barbers Point Lighthouse?

Barbers Point sits in Kalaeloa, just outside Kapolei on Oahu’s leeward coast. The lighthouse stands at the edge of Barbers Point Beach Park, a small city park with parking, restrooms and showers. That matters more than you’d think when you’re arriving dressed for photos and want to stay that way.

The point takes its name from Captain Henry Barber, whose ship, the Arthur, ran aground on the reef here in 1796. Long before that, Hawaiians called this place Kalaeloa: “the long point.”

Three Backdrops in One Short Walk

What makes this spot so rewarding for engagement photos is how much variety lives within a stone’s throw. Barbers Point gives you backdrops of architecture, natural tropical greens, or sand and salty sea. Choose one, or choose them all!

The lighthouse. First lit in 1933, the 72-foot tower still guides ships today. Against a cloudy sky, that clean white column anchored in every frame creates a quiet sense of place— beckoning you home, wrapping you in white light. Years from now, no one will have to ask where your engagement photos were taken. The coastline and lighthouse are famously recognizable, but the beach still feels uncharted.

The limestone ledge. The shoreline is a low shelf of rough stone where the waves break into white spray much like Montauk or Martha’s Vineyard. Sitting together at its edge, wrapped up in one another with nothing behind you but ocean and sky feels like the warm embrace of forever together. It’s the most unforgettable moment and tends to be the image most couples remember from this spot.

The coastal greenery. Low, bright brush lines the sand paths. Photographed through it, the green softens the foreground and wraps around the two of you, adding pops of color most beach sessions simply don’t invite.

Your Engagement Photo Session at Barbers Point Lighthouse

An engagement session here unfolds like an evening walk. We begin on the sand path with the lighthouse behind you, wander through the greenery hand in hand, and finish on the limestone as the sky turns gold. By the time the sun meets the water, you’ll have stopped thinking about the camera altogether.

Proposing at Barbers Point Lighthouse

When you’re planning a marriage proposal, privacy is everything. Barbers Point gives you room to breathe: a path that leads her toward the lighthouse, open water ahead, and a ledge where you’re already waiting by the time she rounds the brush. Tucked out of sight, I’ll capture the second she realizes what’s happening, and every moment after.

Anniversaries and "Just Because"

Not every session needs a ring in it. Anniversaries, a new chapter, a season of life you want to remember exactly as it felt: they all belong out here too.

Arguably the Best Sunset in Oahu

Late afternoon into sunset is the time to be here. Barbers Point faces open water on the leeward side of the island, and if you ask me, it holds its own for the best sunset in Oahu. The lighthouse warms, the clouds blush, and the limestone glows gold. I build your experience so we finish with the sun on the water rather than trying to chase it.

Expect a breeze. The point is exposed, and the wind is part of the look. Hair lifts, dresses move, and some of the most romantic frames of the evening come from simply letting it happen.

More of a morning person? The windward side has its own kind of magic at first light. See Sydney & Shane’s sunrise engagement session at Kaʻaʻawa Beach.

What to Wear for Engagement Photos at Barbers Point

The setting does much of the color work for you: white tower, pale sand, warm stone, vivid turquoise waters and green brush, a soft pastel sky. Clothing that echoes these characteristics photographs beautifully.

  • Colors: sage, cream, sand, blush and dusty blue. Muted tones settle into the landscape instead of competing with it.
  • Fabrics: flowing— think linen or lightweight pieces that move in the wind. Tiered and midi skirts are made for this spot.
  • Shoes: sandals for walking between backdrops. The limestone is sharp underfoot, so save bare feet for the sand.

Tips You Might Not Have Considered About Engagement Photos At Barbers Point Lighthouse

  • Your session is fully permitted. Barbers Point Beach Park is a City and County of Honolulu park, and we handle the permitting for your session before you ever arrive. Nothing for you to file, nothing for you to think about.
  • The lighthouse itself is closed to the public. It’s an active aid to navigation, so every frame of it is taken from the beach, which is where it looks its best anyway.
  • This isn’t a swimming beach. Entry is rough, currents can be strong, and there are no lifeguards. Unless you’re both strong swimmers and have underwater portrait dreams, we keep the water moments at the edge, where the spray does the work.
  • You’ll likely share the shoreline with local fishermen. Barbers Point is a favorite fishing spot. A little patience and a wide berth around their lines keep everyone happy.
  • The stone is uneven. Seated poses on the ledge look dramatic and keep you steady.
