Before the music starts and the guests turn around, there’s a moment that belongs only to the two of you.
At The Charming Estate, that moment can happen on a staircase. From above, it looks like a secret: two people, close together, saying the things they didn’t want to say in front of a crowd. It’s one of my favorite reasons to love this venue.
📍 Where Is The Charming Estate?
The Charming Estate sits deep in the Maunawili Valley in Kailua, on the windward side of Oahu, on the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club property. The Koʻolau mountain range rises behind it, so the views are lush, green and unmistakably Hawaii.
The Ceremony: A Circular Garden Lawn
The venue’s Garden Lawn ceremony site is designed in a circular layout, surrounded by tropical greenery with the mountains beyond. A round layout pulls your guests in close, so the ceremony feels intimate even with a full guest list, and it gives your photos a natural sense of embrace.
The Rain Plan: An Indoor Ceremony Space
On the windward side, showers come and go. The Charming Estate’s answer is the ‘Olena, an indoor ceremony space that serves as the venue’s rain plan, so a passing cloud never has to decide your day for you.
The Reception: The Ali'i Ballroom
Receptions are held in the clubhouse, in the Ali’i Ballroom, which holds up to 200 guests and features high ceilings and flexible layouts. The walk from the ceremony to the reception is just a few feet, which keeps the evening flowing and your guests together.
The clubhouse spans three levels, with an elevator for guests who’d rather skip the stairs.
Private Vows and a First Touch on the Stairs
Not every couple wants to see each other for the first time in front of a hundred people. Some want a few quiet minutes first, to hold hands, read a letter, or say their vows privately before the ceremony.
The estate’s indoor staircase makes a beautiful setting for exactly that. Picture it from above: one of you waiting, the other arriving, a hand reaching back without turning around. Photographed from the top of the stairs, it becomes an image that feels like you were allowed to witness something you weren’t supposed to see.
If you’re drawn to the idea of private vows or a first touch, mention it early so the timeline gives the moment room to breathe.
Good to Know Before You Book
- A wedding coordinator is required for ceremonies and receptions at The Charming Estate.
- Outside food isn’t allowed, with the exception of some desserts approved case by case.
- The venue works with a curated list of trusted vendors, so ask for it early.
- Packages vary. The venue’s premium package includes four months of planning and coordination and all-day access from 10 am to 10 pm.
- Pets aren’t allowed in the clubhouse.
A Photographer's Notes on The Charming Estate
Lean into the green. The Maunawili Valley is one of the lushest settings on the island. Bright, natural greenery around you photographs beautifully, especially with soft, light-colored florals.
Plan for the mountains’ shadow. With the Koʻolau range rising behind the estate, the sun drops behind the ridge before official sunset and the light softens early. Plan portraits a little earlier than you would on a west-facing beach.
Use the details. Between the garden lawn and the clubhouse, there are plenty of places for your rings, stationery and florals to shine.
